Goodwood Festival of Speed
The ultimate bucket-list event for every car enthusiast!
Located in the picturesque South-Western part of England, near Chichester, this magnificent event truly has it all! From classic cars to futuristic concepts, and everything in between. Hypercars, race cars, F1 cars, and motorcycles – the list goes on and on.
I've been fortunate enough to attend this event for several years now, and every year it continues to amaze me with something new.
The Duke of Richmond is the gracious host of this spectacular event, which takes place right in his backyard at the iconic Goodwood House. The house stands as the centerpiece, surrounded by lush green lawns where all the stunning cars are displayed. And the best part? Most of the cars race up the famous Goodwood Hillclimb, aka the driveway, adding an exhilarating element to the event.
Every year I attend, the event seems to grow bigger and better. My first experience was in 2018, when I was still relatively new to this part of the car scene. Since then, I’ve made it a point to attend whenever possible, and in my opinion, the last two years have been the best ones so far.
I love the blend of familiar cars and the excitement of new models and brands joining each year. For me, this event is not only about the cars but also about connecting with people, creating new contacts, and catching up with friends from all over the world. It's the perfect combination of automotive passion and community.
It’s not just the cars that make this event special; it’s the people who bring it to life.
Attending the Event
It has always been, and most likely always will be, an exhausting event. But it’s one of those experiences that leaves you thinking, “How did I even manage to see all of that?”
I’ve never attended the full four days in a row. In my first year, for example, I only attended on Thursday – which, as I’ve come to learn, is the quietest day of the event. However, even Thursday has gotten busier over the years.
While it’s possible to experience the entire event in a single day, it will require sacrifices in terms of what you can see and do. That’s why I would highly recommend attending for at least two days to fully enjoy the event without feeling rushed. It makes the experience far more enjoyable and manageable.
Photography at the Event
One of the things I truly love about documenting the Goodwood Festival of Speed is that it’s not just a static event. I’m passionate about capturing cars in motion, and this event offers endless opportunities for that. On the other hand, taking pictures of cars in the paddocks or on the lawns can be tricky. It’s hard to get a clean shot without either resorting to Photoshop or waiting for long periods for the perfect moment.
One crucial tip I’d offer: Try to arrive as early as possible to capture some great static shots before the crowds gather.
Would I Recommend the Goodwood FoS?
Short answer: Absolutely!
Long answer: If you're a car enthusiast and have been considering attending the Festival of Speed, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. Yes, the event has become more expensive over the years, but it has also grown in size and quality. I’ve been attending for several years now, and I’ll continue to make it a priority to go every year. It’s not just the incredible cars – it’s the people you meet along the way that make the event unforgettable.
For me personally: As I have attended the Goodwood FoS several times now, I would also love to attend the Goodwood Revival one day...
